How to set up and use Instagram privacy controls for safer sharing

Instagram can be a fun place to share photos, videos and stories, but it also collects a lot of information about you. If you have never checked your privacy controls, you may be sharing more than you realise.
This guide walks through the most important Instagram privacy features step by step. You will learn how to control who sees your content, how your profile appears in search, and how to reduce unwanted messages, tags and tracking.
Make your Instagram account private
The first and most effective change is to make your account private. With a private profile, only people you approve as followers can see your posts, stories and followers list. This is a strong default, especially for personal accounts.
To switch to a private account: open Instagram, go to your profile, tap the three lines in the top corner, then tapSettings and privacy. ChooseAccount privacyand turn onPrivate account. Existing followers keep access, new ones must be approved.
Review followers and remove unwanted access
Privacy is not only about a private toggle. It also matters who already follows you. Take a few minutes to review your follower list and remove any accounts you do not recognise or no longer want to share with.
On your profile, tapFollowers. Scroll through the list and for any account you want to remove, tap the three dots next to their name, then tapRemove follower. They are not notified, and they will no longer see your non-public posts.
Control who can message and mention you
Unwanted messages and mentions can be annoying and sometimes harmful. Instagram lets you limit who can contact you by direct message and who can mention or tag you in their content.
Go toSettings and privacyand look forMessages and story replies. Here you can choose who can message you directly, who goes to your message requests, and whether others can reply to your stories. Restrict these to people you follow if you want fewer random messages.
Then go back and openTags and mentions. You can allow tags from everyone, people you follow, or no one. You can also require manual approval of photo tags, and you can limit who can mention your username in stories, comments and captions.
Protect your stories and close friends circle

Stories feel temporary, but people can screenshot them or forward them. You can create extra layers of control so that stories reach only the people you are comfortable with.
InSettings and privacy, tapStory. Here you can hide your stories from specific accounts and decide who can reply. You can also set upClose friends, a private list of people for more personal stories. When posting a story, chooseClose friendsso only that list can see it.
Limit what appears on your profile from others
Other people can affect how your profile looks by tagging you in posts or adding your content to their reels and remixes. If you prefer more control, you can change how this works.
UnderSettings and privacy, visitPostsandReels and remix(names may vary slightly by region). You can disable allowing others to remix your reels, turn off using your posts in their reels and require approval before tagged photos appear on your profile grid.
To manage existing tagged photos, go to your profile, tap the tag icon, then use the options to remove yourself from posts or hide them from your profile.
Tune your activity status and online presence
By default, Instagram may show when you are active online and the last time you were seen. If you want more privacy or simply less pressure to reply quickly, you can turn this off.
InSettings and privacy, scroll toMessages and story repliesorHow others can interact with youand findShow activity status. Turn this off to hide your online status from others. Keep in mind that when you disable it, you also cannot see other people’s activity status.
Reduce data sharing, ads and tracking

Instagram uses your behaviour to personalise ads and content. While you cannot fully opt out, you can reduce some types of tracking and control how much personalised advertising you see.
Go toSettings and privacyand scroll toYour information and permissionsor similar. Look forAdsorAd preferences. Here you can review the categories advertisers use to reach you and turn off options that allow ads based on activity from other apps and websites, where available in your region.
On your smartphone, you can also use the system-level privacy features. On iPhone, adjustTrackingin the privacy section of the system settings to limit cross-app tracking for Instagram and other apps.
Manage search, suggestions and account discovery
You might not want your Instagram tied so closely to your phone number or email. You can adjust how easily people can find your account and how it appears in suggestions.
InSettings and privacy, openAccount centerif it appears, thenPersonal detailsandAccount settings. Decide whether your phone number and email are used for account discovery. You can also unlink your profile from other services that may suggest you to friends.
To clean up your search history, go back toSettings and privacy, look forSearch historyorRecent searchesand clear it. This does not change privacy deeply, but it helps keep your account tidy, especially if others sometimes use your device.
Use blocking, restricting and reporting tools
Finally, know how to act quickly if someone is harassing you or sharing your content in ways you do not like. Instagram offers three main tools: block, restrict and report.
From any profile or comment, tap the three dots.Blockstops the person from finding your profile, posts or stories.Restrictquietly limits their interaction, for example by hiding their comments from others unless you approve.Reportsends content or accounts to Instagram for review if they violate community guidelines.
Using these tools early can prevent small problems from turning into bigger ones. Combine them with the privacy controls above to keep your Instagram presence comfortable and under your control.
