Google, Apple and Mozilla push new browser privacy and performance upgrades into 2026

Major web browsers are rolling out a fresh wave of updates that focus less on flashy features and more on how sites load, track and present content. The changes arriving in Chrome, Safari and Firefox through late 2025 and into 2026 will affect how ads work, how fast pages feel and how much data websites can collect in the background.

For most people the new releases will not look dramatic. Yet under the hood, tighter privacy defaults, smarter performance tricks and new developer tools could gradually reshape what everyday browsing feels like on phones and laptops.

Third-party cookies head for the exit

One of the most significant shifts is the steady retirement of third-party cookies, the small text files that have long powered cross-site ad tracking. Safari and Firefox have restricted them for years. Now Google is testing a full phase-out in Chrome, which still handles the majority of global web traffic.

Google has begun limiting third-party cookies for a subset of Chrome users and is refining its Privacy Sandbox tools that aim to replace old tracking methods with more aggregated, on-device approaches. Regulators in Europe and the United Kingdom are scrutinising the plans, so the exact timeline may slide, but the direction is clear: cross-site tracking will be harder.

For users this tends to mean fewer highly personalised ads that follow them between sites and a smaller risk that browsing histories can be stitched together by unknown intermediaries. For publishers and advertisers it means continued experimentation with new measurement and targeting techniques that do not rely on a simple cookie trail.

More protection against hidden tracking

Cookies are only one kind of tracking. Browser makers are also tightening how much passive data sites can see when a page loads. This data, such as installed fonts, screen size and device details, can be combined into a unique fingerprint.

Recent Firefox releases expand protections that reduce this fingerprinting surface, for example by standardising some reported values and isolating site data so that one domain cannot easily link activity from another. Safari continues to enhance its Intelligent Tracking Prevention features, which limit how long certain identifiers can be used and block invisible page elements that act as trackers.

Chrome has added new controls to manage site permissions and is experimenting with limiting access to some high-entropy browser properties by default. These steps do not make users untrackable, but they significantly raise the effort required to build detailed behavioural profiles without consent.

Performance gains focus on real-world speed

Alongside privacy work, browser teams are adjusting their performance priorities. With most engines already highly optimised, newer improvements focus on how fast pages feel rather than raw benchmark scores.

Chrome’s recent releases refine “bfcache”, a feature that keeps previously visited pages in memory so that returning with the Back button feels nearly instant. Safari is expanding a similar page caching strategy on iOS and macOS, which can make everyday navigation noticeably smoother, especially on slower networks.

All three major browsers are also tuning how they schedule work between tabs, background tasks and visible content. By deprioritising scripts that are not tied to what users currently see, they can improve responsiveness and extend battery life on laptops and phones.

AI features appear in careful steps

AI assistance is slowly finding its way into browsers, though in more cautious forms than in standalone chat apps. Microsoft Edge has been the most aggressive with its Copilot sidebar. Google is testing features in Chrome that summarise long pages or help rewrite text fields, while Mozilla is exploring optional integrations rather than building a proprietary assistant directly into Firefox.

Most of these tools run some processing in the cloud and raise fresh privacy questions, particularly about what text is sent to external servers and how long it is stored. Browser vendors are publishing more documentation about how these features work and are adding clearer toggles so that people can disable them entirely if they prefer a more traditional browsing experience.

New tools for developers, quieter changes for users

Many of the most impactful upgrades are aimed at developers, not end users. Support for newer web standards such as CSS container queries, WebGPU and improved WebAssembly continues to spread, opening the door to more app-like sites that do not require native downloads.

Chrome, Safari and Firefox devtools are gaining richer performance profiling views and network analysis features. That helps site owners diagnose slow code, heavy images or chat widgets that quietly drain resources. Over time, these tools can encourage lighter design choices that benefit users on older or budget devices.

At the same time, browser makers are restricting some legacy APIs that pose privacy or security risks, like unrestricted access to local network information or outdated plugin frameworks. Most people will never notice these removals, but they reduce the potential attack surface for malware and malicious scripts.

What users can do right now

While many changes will roll out silently through automatic updates, there are a few steps that regular users can take to benefit earlier or to keep control of new behaviour.

  • Check privacy and security settings in your main browser and enable stricter tracking protection or cookie controls if available.
  • Review installed extensions and remove any you no longer use, since add-ons can bypass some built-in protections.
  • Turn on performance or energy saving modes, especially on laptops, which often throttle background tabs more aggressively.
  • Watch for new “AI” or “assistant” options and decide whether to keep them enabled based on how comfortable you are with cloud processing.

As 2026 approaches, the biggest browsers are converging on a similar set of priorities: less ambient tracking, more efficient use of resources and a gradual embrace of assistive tools that claim to save time. The changes are incremental rather than revolutionary, but together they point to a web that asks for a bit less data and gives back a bit more speed.
