What is DBaaS (Database-as-a-Service)?

Before we dive into what Database-as-a-service (DBaaS) is, first we need to understand databases. A database is an organized group of data stored within a computer system controlled by database management systems (DBMS). These systems contain massive amounts of data and allow multiple users to quickly and efficiently access and query the data.

The term “database-as-a-services” (DBaaS) refers to software and/or service that enables users to set up, run and scale databases without the requirement to install physical hardware, install software or configure for performance. All of the administrative tasks are taken care of by DBaaS providers, so that all the customer or application owner needs to focus on is utilizing and accessing the database.

What is Database Management?

Database management is the process of managing the information stored within databases. This includes ensuring that it is accessible and secure while maintaining high levels of performance and efficiency.

There are many different types of database management systems, including relational, object-oriented, document-based, and graph-based. Each type of database management system works differently, but they all store information in one way or another.

The most commonly used form of database management today is relational database management. Relational databases organize data into tables, where each table contains rows and columns. Rows represent individual records, and columns contain specific pieces of information about those records.

Data is entered into a database through queries. Queries are statements written in a language called SQL. When a user enters a query, the database server processes it and returns the desired set of data.

How does DBaaS work?

DBaaS is a service offered by Ace Public Cloud that enables businesses to automate many common tasks associated with managing databases. By offering automation tools, it aims to reduce the amount of time needed to complete routine tasks such as backing up data, creating reports, and performing backups.

With automated one-click operations, DBaaS can help companies speed up their project timelines and save money by eliminating tedious and time-consuming manual tasks. For example, the tool allows administrators to perform backup jobs automatically, thus saving hours of labor each month.

Once you move your database to Ace Public Cloud, you have the option of adding software-as-a service (SaaS) deployment. Doing so simplifies the process required to make information available over internet-based connections. This includes enabling access to applications and data across multiple devices.

Storage consolidation can also be a boon of moving a company’s database to the cloud. By consolidating storage space, organizations can free up additional resources to focus on growing their business.

Ace Public Cloud offers a variety of services that include:

  • Backup and recovery
  • Data migration
  • Disaster recovery
  • High availability
  • Security
  • Reporting
  • Monitoring
  • Integration
  • Migration
  • Customization
  • Development
  • Support

The key to not only database health but an organizations health as a whole is compliance and security. If you want to protect yourself and your customers from cyber-attacks, it is vital to identify potential threats in the environment.

These threats could include malware, phishing emails, malicious code, and even insider threats. Once identified, it is critical to take action to prevent further compromise.

This includes developing policies and procedures, training employees in best practices, implementing software solutions, and monitoring systems 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Data Breach Prevention

Identifying potential threats in the database environment is key to protecting customer and organization data. The cost of a breach is significant. It damages the trust between their customers or patients and the company and can hamper future business.

By confirming the environment falls under regulatory requirements such as Sarbanes Oxley, PCI, and HITECH, it becomes easier to audit and reconcile any mandated regulations.

Company Standards

In recent years, many companies have abandoned their database management systems (DBMS) in favor of cloud-based solutions. But what happens when you move away from your legacy data center to a cloud provider like Ace Public Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform or others?

While some vendors offer full-fledged databases, such as Oracle Database and IBM Cognos BI Suite, most do not. Instead, they provide a set of tools that enable you to build your own solution based on open-source software.

The problem with this approach is that it often requires developers to learn how to use a different toolset. In addition, there is no way to customize the application to meet specific needs.

To address both problems, we recommend adopting a standard development methodology, similar to the way that companies develop applications today. By doing so, you can leverage off-the-shelf components and still tailor the application to meet your organization’s unique requirements.

This approach also makes it easier to collaborate across teams. For example, you could assign each team member to work on a particular area of the app, rather than having everyone working on everything.
