What home care services are available for cancer patients?

What to look for and what to ask

When looking for home care services, it’s best to determine the type of care and experience agencies have for cases like yours. It is important to know what health insurance will cover and how much money you will have to pay out of pocket. If you choose to pay out-of-pocket for part of the services you will receive, you will also need to see if the care staff are employed by the home care company or if the individuals are self-employed. In case of opting for the autonomous modality, you will be considered as the employer and may be required to cover the payroll, social security and unemployment taxes of the personnel. You will also need to make sure that the caregiver is “bonded and insured,” which means that they have insurance in case of legal responsibility and that there is coverage in case of theft or damage to private property. It is recommended that references be obtained from the self-employed, even from the agencies for which they worked.

Some agencies limit their services to nursing and one or two other specialties. For those cases where more than one specialist is needed, home care agencies will establish a team to provide care that meets your needs. Other agencies provide a wide range of home care services through nurses, therapists, social workers, housekeepers and home care aides, home health care services near me equipment and medical supplies, medical supply vendors, and volunteers.
