Telegram is popular for fast messaging, big group chats and handy features like cloud backups. That convenience also makes it a target for account takeovers, scam messages and unwanted group invites.

With a few minutes of setup, you can make your Telegram profile much harder to hijack and keep your chats far cleaner. This guide focuses on settings that work similarly on both mobile and desktop.

Lock down login and identity

The most important step is to protect access to your account. Telegram is tied to your phone number, which means anyone who gets a login code could sign in as you.

Start by enabling two-step verification. In the Telegram app, go toSettings > Privacy and Security > Two-step verification. Create a strong password that is different from your email and social accounts, then add a recovery email you actually use.

This password will be requested in addition to the one-time SMS or Telegram code. It stops attackers who might intercept your text messages or trick your mobile provider into a SIM swap.

Next, review active sessions. OpenSettings > Devices(orActive Sessionson some versions). This shows every phone, tablet and computer currently signed in with your account.

End any session you do not recognize, and close older logins you no longer use. If you often log in on shared or work computers, get in the habit of checking this list weekly.

Strengthen privacy for phone, profile and last seen

Telegram lets you choose who can see sensitive details like your phone number, profile photo and online status. Tightening these limits reduces how easy it is for strangers to reach or impersonate you.

Go toSettings > Privacy and Securityand adjust these options:

  • Phone number: Set toMy ContactsorNobody. Under “Who can find me by my number”, chooseMy Contactsto stop people who only know your number from searching for you.
  • Profile photo: ChooseMy Contacts. If you participate in large public groups, consider a neutral picture that does not reveal personal details.
  • Last seen & online: Set toMy ContactsorNobody. You can add exceptions for close friends if needed.

These changes do not impact how you use the app day to day, but they make it harder for strangers to map your activity or scrape your details from public groups.

Reduce spam messages, calls and group invites

Spam on Telegram often arrives through unwanted group additions, random calls or bots sending links. The platform gives you tools to limit this without missing messages from real contacts.

InSettings > Privacy and Securitylook at these sections:

  • Groups & Channels: Set “Who can add me” toMy Contacts. Add trusted exceptions if certain communities need to invite you directly.
  • Calls: Limit toMy Contacts. Use the “Never allow” list to block persistent spam callers.
  • Forwarded messages: Hide your account from being linked when someone forwards your messages. This cuts down on people contacting you after seeing you quoted elsewhere.

When spam still gets through, always avoid tapping suspicious links or downloading unknown files. Tap on the chat title and chooseBlock userorReportif it is clearly malicious or abusive.

Use secret chats and self-destruct timers when needed

Regular Telegram chats are cloud based. That is useful for syncing messages across devices, but sensitive conversations might benefit from more protection.

For this, Telegram offers secret chats. Open a chat with someone, tap their name, then chooseStart Secret Chat. Messages in this chat are end-to-end encrypted and only stored on the devices involved.

You can also set self-destruct timers in secret chats. Tap the three dots or clock icon and choose a time from a few seconds up to one week. Once a message is viewed, it disappears after the chosen interval.

Secret chats are device specific, so they will not appear on your other phones or computers. Use them when sharing passwords, financial data or private documents that should not stay around forever.

Manage data, shared media and linked accounts

Good digital hygiene includes knowing what you have shared and where it lives. Telegram makes it easy to review and trim this footprint.

Open any chat, tap the chat header, then go to the media section to see photos, videos, files and links. Delete items that are no longer needed, especially in chats with people you do not fully trust.

InSettings > Data and Storage, check “Storage Usage” to see how much space Telegram is taking on your device. Adjust “Keep media” to a shorter period if your phone is getting full, or if you prefer that older media is automatically cleared.

Finally, look at connected services. UnderSettings > Privacy and Security, review any logged-in bots or web apps that can access parts of your account. Revoke access for tools you no longer use.

Build safe habits for everyday use

Even the best settings cannot protect against every trick. A few steady habits will keep your Telegram experience safer over the long term.

  • Be skeptical of offers, giveaways or urgent requests, even if they come from known contacts. Accounts can be stolen.
  • Confirm identity on another channel before sending money, login codes or confidential files.
  • Avoid sharing one-time passwords, bank details or government IDs in regular chats. Use secret chats and self-destruct timers if you must share them.
  • Update the app regularly so you receive the latest security fixes.

Taking ten minutes to tune these settings and habits can turn Telegram from a noisy, risky inbox into a safer tool for staying in touch, whether you use it casually or all day for work and communities.
